As part of the Matalan Sporting Promise Programme, we were delighted to welcome Rob Vickerman, former England Sevens Rugby Captain, to Outwood Academy Ripon to speak to our G.C.S.E. P.E. students about his career as a professional athlete. He began with his path from school, the challenges he faced and goals he set himself to achieve his ultimate ambition of becoming Captain of England.
Rob inspired the students and his overall message of staying strong and focused on your goals has left a lasting impression on our students with Year 10 student Olivia Hudson commenting that "it was great to hear from an elite sportsperson who is as normal as we are, so it makes us realise dreams can come true".
Students were then given the opportunity to take part in three exciting, relatively new sports, with coaches from the National Governing Bodies of Tchoukball, Dodgeball and Zumba taking the students for sessions designed to introduce new sports in order to achieve their targets of:
1) Increasing the transition of young people from school to community clubs
2) The retention of young people within sport beyond the age of 14 and
3) Broadening the School Sport offer to include non-traditional sports.
Rhys Langshaw spoke of an ‘awesome experience playing sports we haven’t done before’.
We would like to thank the Harrogate Schools Sports Partnership for giving our students this fantastic opportunity.
