On Thursday 18th September 29 students accompanied by Mr Gaunt, Mrs Staniforth and Mr Wood, left Outwood Academy Ripon at 7.30am to take place in the annual Outwood Family of Schools’ Athletics Championship at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. With 300 athletes representing over 10,000 students from 13 Outwood Academies, the competition was fiercer than ever.
Sir Michael Wilkins, Chief Executive of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, opened the games and 6 hours of exhilarating athletics began.
Outwood Academy Ripon finished in 4th place overall, with the Year 10 Girls’ team of Emma Sorby, Josie Cox, Chloe Bethell, Lucy Atkinson and Lucy Allenby finishing as Outwood Champions in the team competition. Highlights included the Year 10 Boys 4x100m relay team of Kai Tinsley, Rohan Anwar, Joel Francis and Eugene Gorochovas blowing away the opposition to finish in a record time. Lucy Allenby won medals in the high jump and long jump; Lydia Caven won medals in the shot putt and 800m; Kai Tinsley flew through the air to win gold in the Year 10 Boys long jump; Rohan Anwar won the 100m gold medal. Powerhouse Year 9 Brenna Widdowson once again won the shot putt competition and the Dalton family had reason to celebrate with Chloe winning the Year 9 Girls 400m gold medal and older brother Reece smashed the opposition to win the Year 11 Boys 1000m. For the first time there was a Paralympics competition as part of the event and we are delighted that our 2 competitors Joshua Clark and Kieran Higginson both won medals in 200m, 600m and the vortex howler competition. Our students were a credit to themselves, their family, Outwood Academy Ripon as well as the City of Ripon and we are all extremely proud of their achievements.
