Children from Ripon’s schools took part in a special ceremony this week to plant poppy seeds at a specially created remembrance garden at Ripon’s Spa Hotel.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Ripon, members of 21 Engineers, Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion. Children and teachers representing Holy Trinity CE Junior School, Holy Trinity CE Infant School, St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School, Cathedral CE Primary School, Moorside Infant School and Outwood Academy Ripon attended and listened while a soldier dressed in World War I uniform spoke about what is was like to be a soldier in 1914. A bugler played the Last Post while the standards were lowered and we all reflected on the significance of events of 100 years ago. The children were then each given a packet of poppy seeds to scatter in a spiral shaped garden. Lauren Eckersley from Outwood Academy Ripon carried the standard on behalf of HMS Heroes. It was wonderful to see young and old together to mark this special year.
